Colorizing Black & White Photos

For this tutorial use the picture supplied below.
Open the photo  to colorize. It's also a good idea to make a copy first and work on it instead of the original.
I will use this photo of a friend for this.
Click for full size
On this photo, I didn't have to change color depth, but if you have problems, change your photo colors depth to 16 Million Colors.

Open the Layer Palette

Add a new layer ( press "Create layer" button).

Name the layer "Hair", set the Blend mode to "Color".

Make sure the new layer is selected and zoom in on the photo ( use the + key on the 10 key pad to zoom in).
Now select the Freehand tool   then click Tool control
Set as above.
Carefully outline the area to be colored; I will start with the hair, after it's outlined, right click in the hair. You should see the marching ants around the hair.
Next, set the colors to: Red 198 ,Green 180 ,Blue 96
Next, click the Flood Fill tool    then the tool control button
Set to these settings.
Then fill by clicking the hair.  It looks bad but don't worry!
Next, in the Layer for the hair ( it should be set on >Normal-- select >Color instead )
Now, select the Magic Wand  and right click the hair.
Notice that I set the layer opacity to 32 for the hair color.

Next, I'll do the skin following the same steps.
Add another new layer for the Skin.
If you forgot how? Click Here
Set colors to:
 Red 255
Green 203
Blue 153
Outline carefully all the skin with the Freehand tool   and right click on the skin when finished.
Then you will Deselect the eyes and necklace!
Hold the Ctrl key down and select the eyes and necklace with the lasso tool.   Just keep the Ctrl key held down, and with the lasso tool go around one eye, then right click on the eye. Then hold the Ctrl key down again and do the other eye.  Then the necklace.
Next, click the Flood Fill tool   and fill the skin.
Again on the Layer, change from >Normal  to >Color.
Now, select the Magic Wand  and right click the skin.
For the remaining colors,  I used:
Lips
Red 219
Green 21
Blue 63
 Dress
Red 60
Green 64
Blue 244
Necklace
Red 171
Green 142
Blue 7
Eyes

Opacity settings are as above, but you can use what suits your eyes.
After you're done coloring:  Select- Layer / Merge / Merge All / (Flatten)
Finished photo. Save as a .jpeg with no compression if you like.
Of course if you use a different picture, you will use different settings.
